Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Smart choices was the most responsive of the three remodeling contractors we contacted. Rob met with us and listened to our ideas and needs, made additional suggestions to facilitate a better end product and gave us many choices. Moving through the process has included contact with the owner and the project manager to make sure we are all on the same page. Looking forward to an updated bathroom soon. Will up date this review on completion of the project.

Shade Services

Our Pergola & Shade Structure Services in Arizona

We design and build custom pergolas tailored to your backyard layout, whether freestanding over a seating area or attached to your home for a seamless extension of your living space. Choose from wood, aluminum, or vinyl based on your style and maintenance preferences. Every pergola is engineered for Arizona's wind loads and built with proper footings for long-term stability.

Ramadas and gazebos provide full shade coverage with a solid roof — ideal for Arizona's intense summer sun. We build freestanding structures in a variety of styles, from rustic timber to clean modern lines, with options for integrated lighting, ceiling fans, and electrical. These structures create a defined outdoor room that's comfortable year-round.

Alumawood and insulated panel patio covers attach directly to your home's fascia or roofline, providing uninterrupted shade over your back patio. Insulated panels keep the area noticeably cooler than lattice or open-beam alternatives. We handle all structural engineering, permits, and installation — including options for integrated LED lighting and fan mounts.

Shade sails offer a modern, architectural look while providing effective UV protection at a lower cost than solid structures. For maximum flexibility, adjustable louvered roof systems let you control sunlight and airflow with the touch of a button. We install both options with properly anchored posts and hardware rated for Arizona's wind conditions.

How much does a pergola cost in Arizona?

Pergola costs vary by size and material. A basic aluminum pergola starts around $3,000-$6,000, while custom wood or louvered pergolas range from $8,000-$25,000+. Solid patio covers typically run $3,000-$12,000 depending on size and insulation.

Do I need a permit for a pergola in Phoenix?

In most Arizona cities, shade structures over a certain size require a building permit. Attached patio covers almost always require permits. Smart Choice Remodeling handles all permitting as part of our service.

What is the best shade structure for Arizona?

For maximum sun protection, solid patio covers and insulated panels are the best choice. Pergolas with lattice offer partial shade and airflow. Ramadas are ideal for freestanding shade away from the house. We help you choose based on your space, budget, and shade needs. Pergolas are especially popular over outdoor kitchens and fire pit seating areas.
